The Spirit of Rugby is about mateship, camaraderie, bond, deep loyalty to the team, the school, the club. It does not matter where you go in the world, one feels he belongs to the same fraternity. Certainly in part because it's been an amateur sport for so long. It is played worldwide and all over players prepare themselves to go for each other, to work hard at training, to look after one another, to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the team and have a healthy approach in life. All these commitments breed confidence. There's also a feeling of togetherness, which is very strong. A school or a club provides a great social network and a fantastic environment for players in their teens, twenties and even thirties. For a lot of people rugby club becomes a centre of their social life after they leave school. The values shared by the fans are so similar that it is often an example of sportsmanship to see fans of different teams celebrate together during and after the games. Rugby is a safe environment for players and fans from 7 to 77 years old and it tells each player that if each individual strives together towards the same goal the result feels good! In our very individualistic societies, I reckon rugby can bring a little plus when it comes to think about others, to think that everyone's role in a team is respectable. For all its values rugby should be an Olympic Game!
