The athletes who train all year to represent their respective countries have just as much right to be considered as Olympians than any other discipline.

Its better than weight-lifting, gymnastics, dancing, diving, table-tennis, synchronised swimming, archery, badminton, boxing, handball, tennis, shooting, wrestling. Since when have you seen any of those pull in anywhere near 55 000 spectators independent of the Olympics???
