Stroke of genius - Rugby's Olympic history
Posted at 20th May 2009 / 12:44
Baron Pierre de Coubertin, yes, the man himself resurrected the Olympic Games and - stroke of genius, introduced Rugby in 1900. He also played the great game and even refereed the first ever French Championship final, which was won by Racing Club de Paris.
The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens 1896 and were watched by five people and a goat, then Rugby was included in Paris 1900! It proved to be a winner, so it was back in London 1908, Antwerp 1920 and Paris again 1924.
De Coubertin left his post as head of the Olympic Movement shortly afterwards and the IOC canceled Rugby as a sport, even though it sold more tickets than the track and field events! WHAT? Great idea, let's scrap the crowd magnet!
The format of course, was 15-as-side and gold medals went to France, Australia and the USA twice, didn't know that, did you?
Now rugby has returned, knocking on the Olympics' door HARD! This time around in the exciting and high-scoring 7s variety, which is tailor-made for the Games!
And the Baron is back to make it happen! He runs the olympic-rugby.org fan page on facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/olympic-rugbyorg/99584711016?ref=mf
Knock knock!
Who's there?
A couple of million rugby fans on http://www.olympic-rugby.org - wanna play?
