1. Olympics to be rugby's calling card

      Posted at 4th December 2010 / 11:18

The inclusion of Sevens at the 2016 Olympic Games will act as a "calling card" to grow all forms of the game on a global level, the sport's governing body said Wednesday.

The abbreviated form of Rugby Union, a high-octane game featuring seven-a-side teams competing in pool action before progressing to a knock-out stage, was accepted by the International Olympic Committee for the Rio Games.

    2. Vasco da Gama's soccer stadium to host Olympic 7s

      Posted at 22nd July 2010 / 22:31

Vasco da Gama's soccer stadium will be the Rugby Sevens venue for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Brazilian Olympic Committee has revealed that Sao Januario Stadium will be renovated to accommodate the Sevens, which as we all know returns to the Games for the first time since 1924.

    3. Rugby to rock Commonwealth Games

      Posted at 5th July 2010 / 09:22

It is official, the closest thing to the Olympics in terms of it being a ginormous multi-sport event - the Commonwealth in New Delhi Oct 3-14 have announced their rugby lineup. Sixteen countries will participate in the Rugby Sevens tournament.

Samoa, who secured their first International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series crown last week, reigning Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens champions New Zealand, hosts India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Tonga , Canada and Guyana will participate in the tournament from Oct 11-12.

    4. Sevens Rugby is Olympic

      Posted at 9th October 2009 / 12:35

The International Olympic Committee today voted in favour of Rugby Sevens at the Olympic Games - Sevens will be included in the 2016 Games in Rio.

Rugby's final presentation which had the passionate support of the likes of Jonah Lomu, Agustín Pichot and Chery Soon made sure the IOC members were ready to get on their Sevens dress up and picture themselves dancing in the stands at the 2016 Sevens in Rio.

Out of 89 votes, Rugby got an overwhelming 82 yes votes, which is a superb 92%!

Boooom - trytime! Ouva in the corner!

    5. Try or no Try - Rugby or no Rugby

      Posted at 5th October 2009 / 11:41

      Olympic Photo Finish

Ouvaaa! Yes, the tryline has been crossed! But the Olympic Ref will have the final say - Try or No Try? In 2005 the answer was NO!

Rugby Sevens has impressed with skill, passion, fairness, flair and all its other inherent qualities and has sidestepped the rest of the field, tackled the other team sports contenders into touch and scored hugely, getting the nod of the International Olympic Committee jury for recommendation to be included into the Games that will be held in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

The official verdict is 'a recommendation' for inclusion into the Games only.

There is one final try line to cross this week. For both Rugby Sevens and Golf the ultimate test comes when the delegates of the IOC meet in Copenhagen in October and cast their vote on the 9th!

In 2005, when several sports were put forward to be included in the 2012 Olympics in London, it was Karate and also Rugby Sevens who had made the final round. Back then the vote was a definite NO! No to the inclusion of either sport - no to the inclusion of any new sport.

So this time around we have to make sure the IOC delegates know how much we all want rugby back at the Games.

We have to team up, scrum down and make it happen. We held the ball for some good phases of quality play, now it is time to finish and go ouva the Olympic tryline to seal the win.

Let's show them how many people really want rugby at the Games. Help us get more numbers on the olympic-rugby.org petition! Crouch, touch and pause - Engage!

    6. Wellington Sevens sold out in 3 minutes

      Posted at 1st October 2009 / 14:17

Tickets for the 2010 NZI Sevens in New Zealand sold out online in three minutes flat.

All of the publicly available tickets for the Wellington leg of the Sevens World Series were snapped up in the new record time - apparently last time it took all but 10 minutes.

The event is a huge crowd magnet and the demand of tickets by far outstrips the supply. Maybe it is time for a bigger stadium - the Hurricanes probably wouldn't mind?

    8. Rugby gets the nod

      Posted at 13th August 2009 / 20:41

      celebrate

Yes, it is official! Rugby has made it into extra time of the final match in the Olympic test series! We are one step closer.

All other contenders have been discarded in a IOC executive committee meeting in Berlin this week. As we said before, a committee or team rather of 15 people clearly was a good sign for rugby.

But before you get ready to put on your Olympic toga and start a Mexican wave celebrating from now till rugby's Olympic kick-off in 2016, remember there is one final try line to cross.

    9. Rugby and Golf head Olympic race

      Posted at 12th August 2009 / 14:45

According to the New York Times Golf and rugby appear the favorites to be the sports added to the 2016 Summer Olympics, with softball and possibly baseball in the running as well, according to Olympic and international sports officials.

The 2016 Games will be awarded Oct. 2 to one of the four contenders Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro or Tokyo. Seven sports are vying to be included, the other three being roller sports, karate and squash.

    10. Olympic rugby Expert opinions: China

      Posted at 10th August 2009 / 14:46

      china

This week we caught up with a Chinese rugby expert who also has the advantage of still having a lingering taste of the Olympics after the Beijing Games 2008.

Chinese sevens teams have been doing pretty well in recent years, the men's team is top 3 in Asia, and the women's team are Asian champions. The girls also won 9th place at the Dubai Sevens World Cup 2009.

Our expert Ma Xiaomeng who signed the petition as number 49090 works for a rugby website called chinarfl.com. The website is an important platform for Chinese rugby fans and players and provides them with up-to-date rugby news, and multimedia content.

China of course is very much a development country as far as rugby goes, but we all know what the proud nation is capable of when it comes to sports and Olympic achievements.
